Our Purpose
To promote York Region as a great place to do business, to live and to visit.

The Economic Development Committee made significant strides in 1999, both in terms of encouraging economic development and supporting the Region's thriving tourism industry. The Committee continued to position York Region as a premier place to live, work and visit.

One of the major developments in 1999 was a rejuvenated approach to tourism promotion through a restructuring of the Tourism Advisory Committee and the addition of new corporate resources.

Broadcasting the Message

Computer keyboardA York Region tourism web site was designed to showcase the Region's attractions and to provide web-based promotion for some of the smaller tourism operators. Also, the economic development component of the Region's web site was greatly enhanced in 1999.

A promotional video was produced portraying the Region as an attractive place to work, live and invest. The video will be extended in length to more fully capture the attributes of York Region.

Changes were also made to the Region's tourism signage policy and businesses were encouraged to participate in this exciting promotional opportunity. By the end of 1999, there were over 16,500 general direction and tourism road signs maintained by York Region.

Encouraging New Businesses

Developing and encouraging new businesses is a key component in the Region's economic development strategy.

To help new entrepreneurs get started in northern York Region, the East Gwillimbury/Georgina Community Investment Council was established in May. By November, 19 applications with grants totalling $75,500 were approved by the Council for new businesses or business expansions. By the end of the year, over 50 jobs were created and 49 new businesses emerged.

The Region is also a member of the Industrial Technology Network, which supports the efforts of two full-time Industrial Technology Advisors who deliver National Research Council programs in support of innovative new technologies for small- and medium-sized businesses.

Supporting the Equestrian Industry

HorsesYork Region boasts more horses per capita than anywhere else in Ontario. To further support this important industry, the Committee oversaw the creation of the Horse Country Guide 2000 – a directory of the local equestrian industry created in partnership with area municipalities and industry leaders.

A day-long media bus tour was also a major success, showcasing some of the Region's top breeders and equestrian businesses to writers and other industry representatives.

"On The Road" Promotions

The Region increased its profile and promoted local businesses and attractions at several trade shows in 1999, including the Access To Capital Seminar, the Swing North Conference, SAE and the Royal Winter Fair.

Inviting the World to Visit

The Region was an active partner in the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance (GTMA), which promoted the GTA as an attractive business destination in various markets around the world.

The Committee was also very active working with area municipalities in developing local proposals to host specific events as part of Toronto's bid for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. A number of attractive venues were identified and the Region co-ordinated the delivery of the bid packages to the Toronto bid team.
