Population Growth in MunicipalitiesMost of the growth in the Region has occurred within the southern municipalities of Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham. Markham grew from a population of approximately 37,500 in 1971 to an estimated population of 273,805 in 2006. The City of Vaughan experienced the highest growth rate of 8.2% over the thirty-five year period.

As the table above illustrates, the communities of Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill each experienced significant growth relative to all other York Region municipalities.
