Population Growth in Municipalities

 
Most of the growth in the Region has occurred within the southern municipalities of Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Markham. Markham grew from a population of approximately 37,500 in 1971 to an estimated population of 273,805 in 2006. The City of Vaughan experienced the highest growth rate of 8.2% over the thirty-five year period.

A complete listing of the Region's 2001 and 2006 estimated municipal population is displayed in Table 1.

As the table above illustrates, the communities of Markham, Vaughan and Richmond Hill each experienced significant growth relative to all other York Region municipalities. This trend is expected to continue over the next 25 years.
