Volunteerism in Canada

Helpmate Community Information and Volunteer Bureau
Volunteering for community agencies allows Employment and Financial Support participants who have been out of the workforce for a while, or whose work experience is limited, to gain network contacts, and to gain new skills, recent experience, and recent references for their résumé. Non-profit organizations, community organizations, and public agencies offer most volunteer opportunities. York Region Ontario Works participants gain valuable work experience and the organization gains a volunteer to help them contribute to the community.

Each volunteer opportunity may last up to six months and participants may spend up to 70 hours per month volunteering.

How are Community Participation volunteer opportunities created?
  • Ontario Works employment staff are constantly searching for volunteer opportunities for Ontario Works participants.
  • Ontario Works participants can develop their own ideas for volunteering. Once approved by Ontario Works employment staff, the participant can locate a non-profit/public agency or community group willing to sponsor and supervise the placement.
  • Participants who already volunteer in their communities may be able to turn that volunteering into a community participation activity.
  • Non-profit/public agencies and community groups can develop ideas for volunteer opportunities. Our Ontario Works employment experts will match participants' skills and interests with organizations' needs.

For tips on finding volunteer positions, see the Related Links on the right of this page. If you're an Ontario Works participant and you're currently volunteering, make sure to notify your worker.
