York Region invites proposals from agencies serving homeless or near homeless persons in 2005
An opportunity exists for agencies serving the homeless community or those at risk of being homeless to apply for funding for Priority Needs Projects, and Research and Public Education Initiatives. Funds are provided through the National Homelessness Initiative (Supporting Communities Partnership Initiative) and are available from May 1, 2005 – March 31, 2006. Projects must be consistent with the overall community plan to address homelessness.
1. Priority Needs Projects, funded to a maximum of $10,000 per proposal, could include, but are not limited to such items as:
- Furniture, appliances, and supplies (e.g. beds, refrigerators, freezers, etc.) for shelter providers and those organizations providing services to the homeless;
- Minor capital improvements to facilities serving the homeless and/or those at risk;
- Other items that will have a direct impact on the improvement of services to the homeless over the coming months.
2. Research/Public Education Initiatives, funded to a maximum of $100,000 could include but are not limited to:
- Research on issues and solutions related to poverty and homelessness for marginalized groups such as the Aboriginal community, visible minorities, and youth, and those dealing with mental illness, substance abuse, or violence;
- Assessments of best practices in current services and new initiatives;
- Public Education Initiatives that could further public understanding about homelessness in York Region.

Funding Requests for Priority Needs Projects and Research/Public Initiatives should be submitted no later than: 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2005.
