York Region's Community Social Data web page contains research initiatives produced by Community and Health Services that profile factors that impact the quality of life and supports needed by York Region residents. Initiatives include Research Reports, Facts Sheets, Maps and Data Worksheets. These initiatives are based on Census data provided through the Statistics Canada and the Community Social Data Strategy (CSDS).

The information provided is based on the Community Social Data Strategy (CSDS) – an initiative from the Canadian Council on Social Development in partnership with Statistics Canada. The goal of the CSDS is to share data as broadly as possible with community agencies that could not otherwise afford this type of data. This project will increase awareness of the Region's rapidly changing social make-up and can be used to improve access to services by helping Regional Departments including Community and Health Services and Regional agencies and organizations:

  • with program and service planning at the local level
  • with understanding and assessing community needs
  • understanding and responding to demographic trends
  • through improved research and program development

In 2005, York Region partnered with key community organizations to form a Consortium to lead the CSDS projects. Members of the York Region Consortium include:
York Region (Lead Consortium member)
The United Way of York Region
York Regional Police
York Catholic District School Board
York Region District School Board

In order to obtain broader community input, the participation of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, York South Simcoe Training and Adjustment Board, Catholic Community Services of York Region, Vaughan Chamber of Commerce, Town of Markham Planning & Urban Design Department and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of York was sought. The Consortium together with these community organizations are the Community Reference Group (CRG). The CRG is chaired by Mayor Tony Van Bynen, Town of Newmarket and Daniele Zanotti, CEO, United Way of York Region. The CRG gives input into CSDS products and helps share the data broadly with smaller community agencies and organizations.
