Consultants working on behalf of York Region may access York Region geospatial data. For more information, see below.
Consultants working on behalf of other municipalities are directed to make information requests through the municipality. York Region has data-sharing agreeements with other municipalities, conservation authorities and schoolboards, and will supply data through these agreements.
Consultants working on behalf of private sector businesses can obtain information through yrGeo interactive mapping, published map products and Web Map Services. If 2009 orthophotography, digital elevation model or parcel mapping is required in digital or hardcopy form please contact
First Base Solutions.
York Region departments frequently tender projects that require consultants to use
York Region geospatial information, and to supply geospatial data back as part of the project deliverables. York Region Supplies and Services Department has backgrond information on York Region's geospatial infrastructure, and details of the data formats required. Usually these are included as part of the Request for Proposal.
The Geomatics Branch makes geospatial data available to consultants on a project-by-project basis, and requires consultants to sign a data license agreement indicating what project the data will be used for.
All requests to the Geomatics Branch for York Region geospatial data from consultants should be directed through the York Region project manager responsible for the project, who will forward the request to the Geomatics Branch.
Before making a request for data:
- Please assess if any yrGeo services meet the project requirements.
- Ask the York Region project manager if there is an existing map in the York Region Map Library that might suit the project needs.
- Assess the use of the York Region's Web Map Services in your own GIS/CAD software, such as:
1. AutoCAD 2007
2. ESRI's ArcView 9.x desktop GIS
3. Other OGC-compliant GIS software or services
If offline access to York Region's geospatial information is required:
- Scope the request:
1. Use the yrGeoCatalogue service to review the "offline" data available for request-based access.
2. Determine what file format and media the data should be delivered in. By default the Geomatics Branch will post data to our FTP site.
3. Determine the geographic extent of the project study area.
4. List who (names, organizations) will be using the data.
5. Determine who in your firm should be contacted for clarification questions from Geomatics.
- Forward the request to your York Region Project Manager who will then complete an internal service request to the Geomatics Branch.
What Happens Next
- Geomatics will review the request and if necessary contact the name given if clarification of the request is required.
- Geomatics will prepare a Licence Agreement required to grant access and use of York Region data for the specific project only.
- The licence agreement will be emailed to the company contact to be taken to their management for signature.
- Upon receipt of the signed licence agreement, Geomatics will complete the service request.
- An e-mail will be sent to notify posting of the information on the FTP site.
