How we do our business
York Region holds over 250 data layers. While some layers (e.g., orthophotography) are purchased from data suppliers, a great many are created by the Geomatics Branch. Data capture processes include digitizing road centrelines and parcels from Plans of Subdivision submitted by developers. This allows the Region to capture new geographic entities as early in the development process as possible. Spatial datasets are maintained according to weekly, monthly or annual schedules, following data checks and quality assurance procedures. Other datasets are acquired through data licence agreements with other governmental agencies, (e.g., local municipalities, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources).
GIS applications are created following consultation with users, typically following a user-needs analysis approach. Project management principles are applied to application development, whether the application is developed by Geomatics staff or outside contractors.
