yrGeo Tips and Tricks

yrGeo Hints
Sometimes an extra little hint or utility makes a task much easier. The purpose of this page is to provide some hints and tools that make yrGeo easier to use.
Using the Help files in yrGeo
All yrGeo services have extensive help files. You can access these help files by clicking the help link in each service.

yrGeo Help
yrGeoMaps
  • yrGeoMaps is a catalogue of published map products presented in PDF format.
You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4 or higher to open the map documents.
  • If Adobe Acrobat Reader is installed on your machine and you have difficulty downloading the PDF files, minimize the Internet Explorer window and check if you have an Adobe message error.
yrGeoWorkBench
  • Spatial Bookmark
Using this feature, you can navigate through different views and keep the same map extent.

o   You can create your own personal bookmarks if your browser accepts cookies.
o   To add a bookmark for a particular location click on the Locate tab, select the spatial Bookmark option
and click [ add current extent ].
o   You will then be asked to type a name for the new bookmark. Your bookmarks are stored locally as a cookie in your
               browser's memory.
o   Click on your personal bookmark at a later date or in a different view, and the map will jump to that location.

  • Map Legend Settings
When creating an output PDF, you may want to remove legend information for some layers that appear on the
map from the final printed legend.

o   By clicking on the Settings link at the top of the legend list, you can simply uncheck the boxes next to the layers for
which you do not want legend information to appear.

  • Save/Open Session
o   Click the Save Session tool to save your current map viewer extent, layer configuration, and any added
mark-up to be accessed at a later date. The Save Session tool outputs a URL, which you can email or add to your
                map browser favourites.
o   You can open a saved session by clicking the Open Session tool and browse to your saved session file.
yrGeoLocator
  • From the yrGeoLocator viewer you can switch to a complex interactive mapping application by clicking on "Advanced Viewer" button.
yrGeoCatalogue
  • All metadata documents are organized hierarchically into directories, which are the ISO (International Standards Organization) categories. Click on the link to see the list of all ISO Categories and their definitions.
