Regional Council has been actively assisting in protecting the Oak Ridges Moraine for a number of years.
In late 1998 Regional Council directed staff to consult with their counterparts in Peel and Durham regions to determine whether protection policies dealt with the Oak Ridges Moraine. This Council direction resulted in the preparation of the background paper -
The Oak Ridges Moraine - Towards a Long Term Strategy, September 1999 which put forward a case and a process for the Province, the Regions and other interested parties to work together towards a long term strategy for the Moraine.
In 2001 the Region's of York Peel and Durham
proposed strategic directions for Moraine Protection entitled The Oak Ridges Moraine - Proposals for the Protection and Management of a Unique Landscape, May 2001 and undertook public input over the summer prior to finalization of the recommendations.
