York Region Official Plan (ROP)

The Region of York Official Plan (ROP) is a broad based strategic plan adopted by Council in 1994 under Section 17 of the Planning Act.

The ROP provides policies, land use designations and criteria to direct economic, environmental and community-building decisions affecting the use of land.

Since there are nine area municipalities within the Region with differing growth aspirations, the ROP leaves considerable latitude for an area municipality to provide detailed planning policies within the overall framework contained in the ROP.

In addition to the Plan, there are other Regional strategies, plans and guidelines that will also provide a framework for public-sector decisions in the Region. Other initiatives must comply with the overall intent of the ROP.

Since 1994, there have also been a number of Amendments to the ROP which have been incorporated into the current ROP Consolidation.

In December 2009, York Region adopted an updated York Region Official Plan which has been submitted to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing for approval. This updated York Region Officlal Plan - December 2009 can be found here
