Excess Load Permits
The movement of commercial vehicles on the public roads throughout Ontario is regulated under the Highway Traffic Act. Maximum vehicle load weights and sizes are defined in the Act. The Region may, however, grant a special permit for the moving of heavier and/or larger vehicle loads than those specified in the Act. This permission must be obtained by filling out and submitting a permit application.
Lead Time: Application should be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the required date. However more time may be required to acquire additional approvals from other departments, towns and/or cities within York Region for areas under their jurisdiction.
Size Requirements: According to the Highway traffic Act, an excess load permit is required for all loads exceeding the following:

Insurance Coverage: An Insurance certificate confirming minimum coverage of $5,000,000 for bodily injury and property damage combined without deductible and naming the Regional Municipality of York as an additional insured is required with your application. The Certificate must be signed and stamped by your insurance company, and submitted with your application. Your application will not be processed unless it is accompanied with the Certificate of Insurance.
Security Deposit: A security deposit may be required for any category where the move is deemed to have potential for damage to Regional Property. The deposit amount will be determined based on the perceived potential for damage and shall be a minimum of $1,000.
Building Moves: Where the destination of a building move is within York Region, the mover is required to provide approval from the appropriate local municipality in the form of a building permit or letter of permission.
Over size Requirements: Escorts may be required as a condition of the permit. Arrangements and costs for all escorts are the responsibility of the permit holder. The following is a list of escort types and when they are required:

Overweight Requirements: An escort is not required for overweight vehicles, however all loads over 45,000 kg will require a load distribution diagram to be submitted with the application.
The Region restricts weights on some roads during the spring thaw, usually between March 1 and April 30. This protects the road from unnecessary deterioration while the frost is coming out of the ground. These roads will be posted however, to assist you in route planning please review the list provided.
