Ask Our Relationship Experts

Dear Expert,
My pedestrian relationships are going well, but sometimes things move so fast I get caught off guard.  How do I avoid relationship surprises?
Sincerely,
Cautious Motorist

Dear Cautious Motorist,

When it comes to motorist/pedestrian relationships there’s nothing worse than a surprise. In fact, York Region has a new speed limit policy which has revised speed limits along a number of Regional roads. By reducing your speed, you give yourself more time to react and reduce your stopping distance.

Dear Expert,
My pedestrian relationships are good, but the more time we spend together and the faster things go, the more I worry about someone getting hurt.  What should I do?
Sincerely,
Concerned Motorist

Dear Concerned Motorist,

You are not alone. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Approach intersections with caution and scan carefully to look out for pedestrians
  • Slow down when it is raining or dark. Poor visibility can make it very difficult to see pedestrians.  Driving slower will give you more time to see and react to them in an emergency and help keep everyone safe
  • Make eye contact with pedestrians when approaching an intersection so you both will know you have seen each other
Dear Expert,
I value my motorist relationships and don't want any hurt feelings but sometimes things move too fast. How do I let motorists know I want things to slow down?Sincerely,
Concerned Pedestrian

Dear Concerned Pedestrian,

If you’re concerned about speeding at a particular location on a Regional road, you can request a speedWATCH program speed monitoring sign be brought into the area.  Visit the speedWATCH section of this site for more details. You can also take action against aggressive driving by using the Road Watch program. Visit the Road Watch section for more details.

Dear Expert,
I want my children to have healthy relationships with motorists. What can I do?
Sincerely,
Concerned Pedestrian Parent

Dear Concerned Pedestrian Parent,

Parents need to remember that they are role models for their children. Be sure to teach your children how to safely cross the street. As a role model, always cross at crosswalks or intersections and obey pedestrian signals. And be sure to stay alert while crossing ??" which means no talking on cell phones, texting or listening to headphones.

Dear Expert,
Sometimes I’m so caught up in the moment I don’t realize how fast things are going. How can I be more conscious about slowing things down when it comes to my relationship with other motorists and pedestrians?
Sincerely,
Caring Motorist

Dear Caring Motorist,

Being aware of the need to slow things down is the first step. But you’re right, sometimes you can lose track of your speed. On a nice spring day, rolling down a window can help you sense your speed better. Also, avoid loud music as it can drown out speed clues such as engine and wind noise. And make a habit of frequently glancing at your speedometer and using your cruise control whenever possible.
