The Regional Municipality of York has developed a speedWATCH program to respond to concerns related to the issue of speeding. The program is used as a strategy to identify and address excessive speeding.
 
The speedWATCH program encourages drivers to adopt safe operating speeds through the use of speed boards. The boards use detection technology to measure the speed of approaching vehicles and display those speeds back to drivers. They typically display the posted speed limit alongside the captured speed of a vehicle and serves as an education measure to encourage drivers to voluntarily reduce their speed if they are exceeding the posted speed limit.  Encouraging motorists to drive at the appropriate speed reduces the probability and severity of collisions.  York Region's speed boards also have the ability to record the captured speed information for further analysis and enforcement purposes.
 
 
The speedWATCH program is comprised of four main parts:
