Transit Signal Priority
York Region introduced its first Transit-Only phase at Jane Street and Interchange Way/Peelar Rd for the northbound direction. The phase which is represented by a 12" vertical white bar indication is mounted above the red section of the traffic signal head and is used in cooperation with specific signage.
The first of many sure to come, this indication allows transit vehicles to make a northbound left-turn into a mixed commercial/industrial area, servicing both YRT and VIVA routes. The key to this installation was to prevent non-transit traffic from performing a northbound left-turn manoeuvre. Upon activation motorists are faced with a vertical white bar above a red signal indication. Similar to a left-turn arrow, transit vehicles are permitted to make the specific manoeuvre, while non transit vehicles are required to stop and provide right-of-way. Lane designations prevented non-transit vehicles from occupying the northbound left-turn lane. While some "old-habit" drivers violate the designations and perform the manoeuvre, a continued police presence and time is expected to rectify this situation.
