In 2000, the York Regional Forest became the first public forest in Canada to be Forest Stewardship Council certified. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. Forest Stewardship Council certification is recognized internationally as the 'gold' standard.
FSC certification is given for period of five years. At the end of each five year period the forest is re-assessed to determine if management practices meet the FSC standards. If the standards are met certification is granted for another five year period.
In March 2010 the York Regional Forest will be re-assessed by its certifier, the Rainforest Alliance. As part of the forest certification re-assessment process, the Region and the Rainforest Alliance are seeking input from the public regarding the management of the York Regional Forest in relation to the FSC standard.
