What is a Smart Work Zone?
A Smart Work Zone is a roadway construction project equipped with various Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology. Motorists travelling near the construction zone area will see electronic signs placed at the entry points displaying the current expected range of travel times through the construction site.
Where is the Smart Work Zone in York Region?
York Region recently piloted the Smart Work Zone technology on a road resurfacing project on Jane Street from Langstaff Road to Rutherford Road.
The project was completed in late August.
Portable remote traffic microwave sensors were installed throughout the construction zone.
Different technologies were used to compare volumes, speeds and travel times in order to provide travel time information to motorists.
Using electronic signs to provide travel time information, before arriving at construction zones, gives motorists the option of either travelling through the construction zone or taking an alternate route.
What is the impact?
The Smart Work Zone is expected to demonstrate the capability of ITS technology to manage traffic operations, divert travellers to appropriate alternate routes during times of work zone congestion, reduce traffic congestion, enhance safety performance for road users and workers and reduce traveller delay and increase tolerance of work zone delays.
Your feedback is very important
Your feedback is important because the Region is considering adopting this program in other municipalities.
All survey participants will be entered into a draw to win a GPS.
