Family Day & Retail Business Holidays Act (RBHA)

The Government of Ontario has passed legislation designating the third Monday in February as a statutory holiday called Family Day. This year Family Day will be observed on Monday, February 18, 2008.

Most York Region offices will be closed, including the Court Services at the Tannery Mall in Newmarket and South Services Centre in Richmond Hill. Traffic or bylaw offences are not scheduled for February 18th.

Essential services, including Emergency Medical Services, Long Term Care and Water and Wastewater will continue. Roads will be cleared in the event of inclement weather.

The Retail Business Holidays Act (RBHA) has been amended to include Family Day as a holiday.

Businesses will be closed on Family Day, with the exception of those exempted under the RBHA (i.e. gas stations, pharmacies) and selected businesses that have requested and received permission from York Regional Council under the province's tourism criteria, who wish to remain open.

All businesses that have been provided an exemption by York Regional Council for "all holidays", or "all holidays with the exception of Christmas" may stay open on Family Day.

The Retail Business Holidays Act applies to all municipalities across Ontario, with the exception of the City of Toronto. The City of Toronto Act allows Toronto to identify which holidays stores are closed. Family Day is not included in this list.
