At approximately 3 a.m. on Monday July 11, a fire broke out in the Dalton Park Quality Living Home townhouse complex in the the Town of Georgina. Although no residents were seriously injured in the blaze, some residents lost pets and most of their possessions. Many of theses residents are now homeless because of the devastating fire.
Community and Health Services staff were first involved when EMS responded to the fire and other staff from across the Department have been at the Information and Referral Centre since Monday morning working with tenants to ensure they have access to basic necessities (food, shelter and public health supports). Regional staff are working closely with the Town of Georgina, the Salvation Army and Canadian Red Cross to help tenants discuss housing options and obtain community referrals and information on York Region social services, including emergency funding that may be available to them. It will likely be some time before these individuals and families are fully settled having suffered such a large loss.
While a number of generous donations have been pouring in, the residents affected by the fire are most in need of financial support. For those who wish to donate to the individuals and families displaced by the fire, gift cards and monetary donations are very much needed, welcome and encouraged. To donate, please contact:
• Salvation Army – 905-722-9076
• Town of Georgina – 905-476-4301, ext. 213
