York Region releases Strategic Plan progress report

York Regional Council and Regional staff on track in achieving strategic priorities
NEWMARKET - The Regional Municipality of York today released its first progress report on the 2011 to 2015 Strategic Plan which shows York Regional Council and Regional staff are well on their way towards achieving the goals and objectives in seven strategic priority areas.

“Regional Council is committed to ensuring York Region is a robust and vibrant community,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “This progress report is an important tool to help ensure we are meeting, and in some cases exceeding, the needs of residents and businesses across York Region.”

The progress report also provides a scorecard summarizing the status of the indicators of success for each 2011 to 2015 strategic priority area.

“All York Region initiatives that began in 2011 are either complete or on schedule for completion”, said Town of Richmond Hill Mayor David Barrow, Chair of the Region’s Finance and Administration Committee. “York Region staff are to be commended for all of their hard work in helping to achieve what are rigorous goals and objectives for this Council term.”

The progress report, which coincides with the current term of York Regional Council, provides a snapshot of the interconnected, strategic priority areas for York Region. These are:

1) Continuing to deliver and sustain critical infrastructure - including roads, water, wastewater and transit
2) Improving social and health supports - through homelessness prevention, immigration settlement,
improved ambulance response times and child care subsidies
3) Increasing the economic vitality of the Region - by increasing employment opportunities, attracting
innovative employment sectors and investment
4) Focusing growth along regional centres and corridors - by increasing mixed-use development and optimising transportation services and capacity
5) Managing the Region’s finances prudently - through sound fiscal management practices and use of performance metrics to guide policy decisions
6) Making Regional services more user-friendly - through increased public awareness and development of a new customer relationship management system
7) Strengthening Organizational Capacity - through employee performance management and corporate learning opportunities

York Region’s 2011 to 2015 Strategic Plan is part of York Region’s long-range strategy called Vision 2051.
