York Region Transit introduces new transit service to Georgina and East Gwillimbury

GEORGINA – York Region Transit (YRT) announced new bus service to Georgina and East Gwillimbury today. The service expansion was announced at Glenwoods Plaza in Keswick, where a transit launch and bus stop unveiling took place. The event was attended by York Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch, Georgina Mayor Jeffrey Holec, East Gwillimbury Mayor James Young and Newmarket Regional Councillor Diane Humeniuk, Chair of the York Region Transit Committee.

"Beginning September 3rd, conventional transit will now be available for residents in the municipalities of Georgina and East Gwillimbury," said Chairman Fisch. "We set an ambitious goal to get 30 per cent of all commuters to use public transit over the next two decades. These new routes will help us attain that goal."

The new transit service includes two brand new routes in Georgina with stops at 12 major destinations, including schools, the GEM Theatre and the Keswick Seniors Centre. It also includes three routes extended from Newmarket into East Gwillimbury. These routes will provide service to Sharon, Holland Landing and the Silver City Cinemas near Yonge Street and Green Lane.

"These new routes will help to fulfil a commitment we made under the YRT Five-Year Service Plan to extend service to more York Region residents," said Newmarket Regional Councillor Diane Humeniuk, Chair of the York Region Transit Committee. "I am confident that Georgina and East Gwillimbury residents will find this a valuable service."

The addition of conventional transit is a first for both Georgina and East Gwillimbury, and is part of a $4.2 million expansion designed to make transit more accessible to York Region residents. The new transit services will complement the specialized transit already in place.

"The addition of bus routes is exceptional news for people of all ages – residents, visitors and future generations," exclaimed Jeffrey Holec, Mayor of Georgina. "Georgina is a better community today."

"The new routes in East Gwillimbury will be extremely helpful," added James Young, Mayor of East Gwillimbury. "These transit links represent convenient and timely service for our residents, our businesses and our visitors. This will be of benefit for our seniors and youth in need of transportation."

Residents of Georgina and East Gwillimbury will be able to ride any of these five new routes free of charge between Tuesday September 3, 2002 and Saturday, September 7, 2002.
