York Region Transit Five-Year Service Plan to receive input

NEWMARKET – York Regional Council has approved a draft report of the York Region Transit Five-Year Service Plan, which outlines the Region's proposal to provide an effective, convenient alternative to private automobile use.

A copy of this report will now be circulated to the area municipalities in York Region, GO Transit, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), Brampton Transit, the Regions of Durham and Peel, the Towns of Pickering and Ajax, and Boards of Trade and Chambers of Commerce in the Region. Comments will be received by March 15, 2002.

"The importance of a viable public transit system across York Region is clear. This plan will help identify additional vehicles and service routes we can add to our system," said Bill Fisch, Regional Chair. "At the same time, York Region is working to create inter-regional linkages that are essential to building a strong transportation network."

The Five-Year Service Plan outlines the first of a series of transit improvements, designed to relieve traffic congestion and ensure the efficient movement of goods and persons through York Region over the next 30 years.

As one of the fastest growing regions in Canada, the York Region Transit Five-Year Service Plan calls for:

  • Review of existing transit services (both conventional and specialized services for persons with disabilities)
  • Development of comprehensive service standards
  • Development of planning and consultation processes with area municipalities and other agencies
  • Development of a fare strategy for transit in the Region
  • Examination of projected growth
  • Development of a phasing plan for both capital and operating budgets

The Five-Year Service Plan complements the York Region Transportation Master Plan, a vision that foresees an integrated road and public transit network that will support our growth to 2031.
