York Region Chair Bill Fisch to address annual Canadian Urban Institute conference

NEWMARKET – Bill Fisch, Chair of the Regional Municipality of York, will discuss the benefits of partnership to develop new transit initiatives during the Canadian Urban Institute's 4th Annual Municipal Infrastructure Partnership Conference. The conference, entitled Working for Better Roads, Water, Transit and Borders, will be held Wednesday in Toronto.

BACKGROUND:

  • Regional Chair Bill Fisch will discuss the York Region Partnership Strategy during a morning session entitled Tackling Transit across the GTA: New Mandates and Approaches.
  • The Region of York has received submissions from five consortia responding to a Request for Qualifications regarding a Public-Private Partnership for a York rapid transit plan.
  • Such a partnership would be the first of its kind in Canada, would fast track the successful delivery of inter-regional rapid transit and incorporate the most advanced transit technologies currently in use.
  • The Canadian Urban Institute conference will also include a speech from Dr. Gordon Chong, GO Transit Chair, on the future of Regional transit, and David W. Guscott, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Transportation, on the inter-regional transit strategy beyond the Greater Toronto Area.
