York Region offering mapping services online

NEWMARKET – York Region is now providing public access to its mapping and spatial information online through YorkExplorer from the York Region Web site.

"This initiative is in keeping with our quality of service principle in Vision 2026, the Region’s strategic plan for the next 25 years," said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch. "It states that we will deliver leading-edge, effective, timely services to meet the needs of York Region’s residents and businesses."

YorkExplorer presents a user-friendly web browser environment that can be easily handled by most computer users. The following internet mapping services are currently available:

  • YorkMaps are published maps presented in .pdf format that show the whole or part of the Region. York region base map and maps showing historical settlement patterns and the recreation and hiking trails of the region are among those currently available.
  • YorkLocator maps provide a quick and easy way to find locations. By entering an address, intersection or postal code, or by using the dropdown menus on the screen, a user can create a locator map.
  • YorkAtlas is a more interactive mapping service that allows users to query features in a map window, search a database, zoom in and out, and add and remove map layers for specific contexts. Layers of information currently available include regional roads, wards and polls, regional transit routes, solid waste facilities, schools, industrial land available for development, natural areas, forestry and the Oak Ridges Moraine.
  • YorkAerial services deliver aerial photography in both ortho (straight down) and oblique (sideways from the plane at 45 degrees to the ground) views.

"YorkExplorer has already proven to be a popular and valuable addition to the York Region Web site since it was first made available in June," said Markham Regional Councillor and Deputy Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Chair of the Region’s Planning and Economic Development Committee. "Additional services may be developed for public use, depending on demand and feedback from users."
