Hot weather health protection during energy emergency

NEWMARKET – With the call to conserve electricity and water, and the possibility of rolling blackouts during this provincial energy emergency, Dr. K. Helena Jaczek, the Medical Officer of Health for York Region, reminds residents, especially seniors, to take extra precautions during the hot weather expected this week.

"High temperatures can cause heat-related illness, including heat stroke and heat exhaustion," says Dr. Jaczek. "We are asking residents to follow basic precautions to protect themselves from possible illness".

The following are some preventative measures to protect your heath when temperatures are extremely high:

• Reduce physical activity
• If you must be outside, plan activities before 11:00 a.m. and/or after 4:00 p.m.
• Attempt to be in the shade as much as possible

• Drink extra liquids, at least 6 to 8 glasses of water, and maintain adequate salt intake
• Heavy sweating removes water, salt and minerals from the body. Increase your fluid intake regardless of your level of activity.
• Avoid drinking soft drinks, alcohol and caffeinated drinks as these will deplete the fluids in your body.

• Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of natural fibres like cotton.
