Outdoor water advisory issued for York Region

NEWMARKET – Due to the uncertainty created by the current Ontario power crisis, the Regional Municipality of York has asked its municipalities to restrict outdoor water use.

All persons are requested to refrain from using municipal water from a hose, pipe, sprinkler or permanent irrigation system for the purposes of watering lawns or gardens, washing vehicles, sidewalks or driveways, and filling or topping up swimming pools.

This step is a precautionary measure, to ensure that sufficient water is available in the Region's reservoirs in the event of a temporary power outage.

As the province works to stabilize Ontario's power supply, York Region staff will continually reassess the water situation. The water restrictions may be lifted when the energy system has stabilized.

For information on how to conserve water, please see the attached fact sheet.

Fact Sheet

Tips for conserving water during the power crisis

  • Refrain from lawn watering.
  • When cutting your lawn, leave the grass at least 8 cm (3 inches) long to provide shade for the roots.
  • Leave grass clippings on the lawn to increase organic matter. Grass is 80 per cent water and readily decomposes.
  • Don't top up swimming pools.
  • Check for and repair leaks in outdoor faucets, pipes and hoses. Leaks result in lost water and reduce water pressure.
