York Region wins Community Export Development Award

NEWMARKET –  The Community Export Development Award from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and a certificate of recognition from Premier Dalton McGuinty were presented to the Regional Municipality of York today at York Regional Council.

 

“With a gross domestic product representing 22 per cent of the provincial total, York Region already is a leading exporter in Ontario,” said Regional Chair and CEO Bill Fisch. “But this award doesn’t recognize past achievement – it recognizes the work we have done to develop future export potential.”

 

The Region was nominated by TD Commercial Banking in recognition of the Region’s Export Development Initiative which assists small and medium-sized regional companies achieve success in the export marketplace.

 

Through this program, the Region supports two Export Advisors and delivers export awareness workshops and seminars.  In 2004, a series of Global Market Diversification seminars were organized focusing on the markets of Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Latin America.

 

“I’d like to congratulate York Region’s Planning Commissioner Bryan Tuckey, and his staff for this achievement,” said Markham Regional Councillor Frank Scarpitti, Chair of the Planning and Economic Development Committee. “This is another important accomplishment by this team which is making a difference in ensuring the quality of life for everyone in York Region in the years to come.”

 

The formal presentation of the award was made at the Outstanding Business Achievement Awards dinner in Toronto on November 10, 2004.  Regional staff and the Export Advisors were in attendance to receive the award.

 

Helping regional companies succeed in the export marketplace is an integral part of the Region’s recently released draft Economic Strategy.
