York Region recognized for enhancing accessibility

NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York was recognized at the Future Abilities and Creative Employment (FACE) Investing in Ability Awards Banquet last evening.

 

In addition to raising critical funds to link employees with disabilities to services and business that strive to be inclusive, the banquet honoured and recognized a total of 14 corporations that successfully promote diversity within the workplace and actively recruit and accommodate individuals with disabilities.

 

York Region was recognized for its commitment, both as an employer and as a promoter of accessibility to give people with disabilities more opportunities in York Region as a whole.

 

"This award recognizes the many initiatives underway in every regional department to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities as outlined in Understanding Barriers: York Region's First Annual Accessibility Plan," said Vaughan Regional Councillor Joyce Frustaglio, Vice-Chair of the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC), who accepted the award on behalf of the Region.  "The ongoing involvement of the York Region AAC in our Accessibility Plan has been a crucial element as its members have and continue to provide helpful advice and important guidance."

 

FACE is a charitable organization that works to break down barriers to employment experienced by persons with disabilities in York Region and Bradford West Gwillimbury.  It provides leadership on initiatives that help employers and employment services to accommodate persons with disabilities. FACE projects actively promote changes that affect people from a wide variety of disability groups who are entering, or returning to the work force.
