NEWMARKET - The Regional Municipality of York Transportation & Works Department is encouraging residents of York Region to participate in a series of three workshops to discuss options in managing waste remaining after diversion through recycling and composting.
The Region is conducting these workshops as part of a Durham/York Residual Waste Study. Feedback obtained from these workshops will be used to develop the EA Terms of Reference for this study.
York Region currently exports the majority of its garbage to a Michigan landfill site. By addressing the social, economic and environmental concerns of York Region residents through an Environmental Assessment (EA) Study, the Region can examine alternative approaches to waste disposal.
The participation of York Region residents is key to the success of this Environmental Assessment (EA) Study. To this effect, we encourage all York Region residents to attend the workshops and share their perspective on what should be included in this joint EA Study.
The first workshop will focus on alternative approaches to managing waste including:
- Types of alternative disposal approaches and technologies to consider
- Methods of managing garbage remaining after diversion by residents
- Technologies to consider such as gasification, combustion or other energy from waste technologies
- Criteria or methods to consider in order to compare alternatives and determine the best solution
