Environmental enhancement efforts to coincide with Earth Week
NEWMARKET –School children from across York Region will be participating in re-planting efforts around local streams as part of the Adopt-a-Stream program. The program, between April 24th and May 5th, is one of a number of environmentally-positive activities York Region is hosting as part of Earth Week celebrations.
The Adopt-a-Stream program is a partnership between York Region, York Environmental Stewardship and Environmental Earth Angels.
The program encourages community groups, including school classes, to adopt stream crossings (where Regional roads and streams intersect) within their neighbourhoods. Participating groups work to help preserve the health of the stream by keeping it free of litter and re-plant the area with a selection of local plant species.
Nine different schools from across the Region will be participating over the next two weeks. The groups represent a range of grades, including a number of different school-organized environmental clubs.
The program offers participants and opportunity to learn about the environment in a hands-on setting, while improving local water quality by increasing plant habitat and reducing road runoff. Participation is free and educational materials are available prior to planting.
The program partnership is funded by the Regional Municipality of York and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
For a list of planned events over the next two weeks, please view the following Fact Sheet.
