York Region urges caution at intersections as potential power reductions or rolling blackouts may affect traffic signals

 

NEWMARKET – York Region is asking all motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to exercise caution during today's drive home if they encounter flashing or non-functioning traffic signals.

 

When encountering red flashing or non-functioning lights, drivers are required by law to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

 

With record-setting electricity consumption due to the prolonged hot weather, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has advised that power reductions or rotating blackouts may be necessary as early as this afternoon. 

 

Such power reductions, as directed by the IESO, may cause intermittent flashing of traffic signals at York Region intersections, and rotating blackouts may cause traffic signal outages.
