Highway 7 and Jane Street intersection to remain closed for up to a week as work begins on extensive repairs

Broken watermain causes significant damage to York Region intersection

 

NEWMARKET – The intersection of Highway 7 and Jane Street will remain closed to commuter traffic to ensure public safety and allow for repairs following a broken watermain earlier this morning.  Repairs are estimated to take up to a week to complete.

 

The watermain break occurred at approximately 8 a.m. this morning, with York Regional Police closing the intersection at 9 a.m.

 

Highway 7 remains closed from Millway Avenue to Creditstone Road.  Jane Street also remains closed from Doughton Road to Pennsylvania Avenue / MacIntosh Boulevard.  Local traffic is being allowed in this closed area.

 

Commuters travelling north-south in the area of Highway 7 and Jane Street are encouraged to use Highway 400, Weston Road and Keele Street, while commuters travelling east-west should use Rutherford Road.

 

Construction work will include both sewer and watermain repairs.  Large portions of roadway need to be excavated, replaced and temporarily repaved before the road can be re-opened.  Additional repairs will also be required later this spring.  York Region and the City of Vaughan are working co-operatively to carry out all repairs as quickly as possible.  York Region is working with York Regional Police on traffic co-ordination in the affected area.

 

Viva rapid transit will be unaffected by the closure, however delays may occur due to the intersection closure.  York Region Transit (YRT) is detouring two of its bus routes – YRT Route 77 and TTC Route 35D – to maintain service to the area.

 

YRT Route 77 – that travels westbound along Highway 7 – will be temporarily re-routed to run north on Edgeley Boulevard, west on Pennsylvania Avenue / MacIntosh Boulevard and south on Creditstone Road for eastbound travellers, with opposite directions for westbound travellers.

 

TTC Route 35D – that travels on and around Jane Street – will be temporarily re-routed to run west on Interchange Way and north on Edgeley Boulevard for northbound travellers, with opposite directions for southbound travellers.
