York Region schools participate in Adopt-a-Stream Crossing programThe Adopt-a-Stream Crossing program is a partnership between York Region, York Environmental Stewardship and Environmental Earth Angels.
The program encourages community groups, including school classes, to adopt stream crossings (where Regional roads and streams intersect) within their neighbourhoods. Participating groups work to help preserve the health of the stream by keeping it free of litter and re-plant the area with a selection of local plant species.
The program offers participants and opportunity to learn about the environment in a hands-on setting, while improving local water quality by planting trees and shrubs which provide habitat and mitigate the impacts of road runoff. Participation is free and educational materials are provided prior to planting.
Events are planned for the following dates, locations and times:
The program partnership is funded by the Regional Municipality of York and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
