Public consultation events to be held on April 10, 12 and 14th to discuss Durham / York Waste Study and proposed facility sitesNEWMARKET – As a part of the Durham/York Residual Waste Environmental Assessment Study being conducted by Durham and York Regions, three public consultation events will take place in York Region on Tuesday, April 10th and Durham Region on Thursday, April 12th and 14th, to discuss five potential sites (one in York and four in Durham) recommended for a proposed thermal treatment facility to manage both Regions' waste. The five sites were recommended and approved for public consultation at The proposed site in York Region is located in the Town of Following public consultation, further studies will be conducted on all five potential sites throughout the spring and summer and a preferred site will be recommended to York and Durham Councils in Fall 2007.
BACKGROUND: York Region has partnered with Durham Region on the Durham/York Residual Waste Environmental Assessment Study to find a way to manage the garbage remaining after diversion efforts, such as re-using, recycling and composting. York Regional Council is dedicated to increasing waste diversion and last fall committed to diverting 65 per cent of waste from landfill by 2010. - 30 -
