York Region to hold annual Litter Roundup Event for studentsMore than 6,500 Grade Five students from 100 schools pitching in to help environmentNEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York will be holding its 4th Annual Litter Roundup Event for over 6,500 Grade 5 students attending public and Catholic elementary schools across York Region this Thursday, April 26th.
Approximately 100 schools will be participating in the event this year to help the environment and celebrate Earth Week, representing a 28-per cent increase in school participation from 2006. The Litter Roundup Event will help educate future generations on the effects of littering and what individuals can do to prevent the creation of litter. Event sponsor Tim Hortons will be providing a package of seeds to all participants as well as an educational game to all participating classes.

Rain Date: Thursday, May 3rd, 2007 WHERE: St. Anne School 105 Don Head Village Boulevard, Town of Richmond Hill Media Contact: Barbara White (905) 883-0311 WHAT: Students picking up litter on and around school property WHO: 52 students and teachers from St. Anne School BACKGROUND: • Approximately 786 bags of litter were collected during the event in 2006. • York Regional Council is dedicated to increasing waste diversion and last fall committed to diverting 65 per cent of waste from landfill by 2010.
• In partnership with our nine local municipalities, York Region has created the Joint Waste Diversion Strategy - a report outlining how the Region will increase its current diversion rate over the years to come.
• Solid Waste Management is the Regional branch responsible for planning, financing and delivering environmentally-sound solid waste diversion and disposal that ensures public health and safety. This includes food waste and Blue Box processing, management of public drop-offs and transportation and disposal of municipally-collected waste.
