The Regional Municipality of York hires two new commissioners

Commissioners of new Transportation Services and Environmental Services departments

 

NEWMARKET – York Regional Council today confirmed the hiring of Kathleen Llewellyn-Thomas as Commissioner of the Region’s Transportation Services department and Erin Mahoney as Commissioner of Environmental Services department.  Both positions are effective January 21, 2008.

 

“On behalf of York Regional Council, I would like to welcome Kathleen and Erin to our corporation.  Both have a distinguished history in management and will be tremendous assets for our Region,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch.  “Kathleen brings a wealth of engineering, planning and housing development experience from a 26-year career with the City of Toronto, and Erin brings equally impressive credentials in environmental engineering through a 20-year career in consulting engineering.”

 

Kathleen Llewellyn-Thomas, P. Eng

 

Kathleen Llewellyn-Thomas joins the Region after an exemplary career at the City of Toronto, where she most recently served as Director of Affordable Housing Development in the Deputy City Manager’s Office.  Kathleen has an extensive background in infrastructure and transportation planning, engineering design, municipal management and public housing.  Her duties at the city included:

 

• Overseeing engineering design, contract preparation and administration for road engineering projects
• Preparation of Capital Works plans
• Overseeing land development applications and ensuring building compliance
• Directing planning for environmental assessments
• Establishing an affordable housing office to build and manage affordable homes

 

Kathleen is a professional engineer with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering from Queen’s University.

 

Erin Mahoney, B. Sc, M. Eng

 

Erin Mahoney joins the Region after a distinguished career with an internationally-recognized environmental engineering services company, where she most recently served as Vice President of National Environmental Business.  Erin has an extensive background in private sector management, business operations and consulting in the field of environmental engineering.  Her previous duties included:

 

• Preparing and implementing national strategic plans
• Managing projects involving water and wastewater treatment, waste management, environmental legislation, approvals and public consultation
• Overseeing project delivery activities for 450 staff
• Directing environmental projects, including York Region’s York Durham Sewage System (YDSS) Interceptor Trunk Sewer and Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer

 

Erin holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Western Ontario.

 

The hiring of two new Commissioners follows a recommendation to Regional Council to split the duties of the former Transportation and Works department into two separate departments.  Transportation Services is responsible for Roads and Transit, while Environmental Services is responsible for Water, Wastewater and Solid Waste Management.
