Special York Region Solid Waste Committee meeting scheduled

NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York will be holding a special meeting of the Solid Waste Management Committee tomorrow at the York Region Administrative Centre, Committee Room B at 3 p.m. or immediately following the Durham/York Residual Waste Study Joint Management Group meeting.

The special meeting has been called to consider a short-list of potential sites for the proposed thermal treatment facility to manage Durham and York Regions’ residual waste.

BACKGROUND:

York Region has partnered with Durham Region on the Durham/York Residual Waste Environmental Assessment Study to find a way to manage the garbage remaining after diversion efforts. 

York Regional Council is dedicated to increasing waste diversion and last fall committed to diverting 65 per cent of waste from landfill by 2010.

In April 2006, thermal treatment with energy recovery was recommended as the preferred technology for managing residual waste (the waste left over after diversion efforts) is thermal treatment with energy recovery. 

In Fall 2006, the Study project team finalized the evaluation and screening criteria for potential sites for the facility and began searching in both Regions.  This process also included two public consultations where any party interested in proposing a privately-owned site for a potential new facility could submit their proposal.
