York Regional Council to consider proposed list of facility sites

 

 

NEWMARKET – Noting a key milestone in the Durham/York Residual Waste Study, York Regional Council tomorrow will be considering a recommendation outlining a short-list of five potential sites in Durham and York Region for the proposed thermal treatment facility to manage York and Durham's residual waste.

 

The report under consideration is being brought forward today during Durham Regional Council's meeting at 9:30 a.m., but is subject to York Region's approval.  Following approval by both Regions, the public will be consulted through a series of public meetings in both regions during the second week of April.

BACKGROUND:
York Region has partnered with Durham Region on the Durham/York Residual Waste Environmental Study to find a way to manage solid waste remaining after diversion efforts, such as re-using, recycling and composting. 

 

York Regional Council is dedicated to increasing waste diversion and last fall committed to diverting 65 per cent waste from landfill by 2010.

 

In June 2006, thermal treatment with energy recovery was recommended as the preferred technology for managing residual waste (the waste left over after diversion efforts).

 

In Fall 2006, the Study project team finalized the evaluation and screening criteria for potential sites for the facility and began searching in both Regions.  This process also included a public call for willing sellers where any party interested in proposing a privately-owned site for a potential new facility could submit their proposal.

 

Upon approval from both Durham and York Regional Councils, consultation with the public will take place this April.  Further studies on all five potential sites will take place throughout the spring and summer and a preferred site will be recommended to York and Durham Councils in Fall 2007.
