Most drowning incidents are preventable so keep YorKids Safe

Safe Kids Canada Week is May 28th – June 3rd
 
NEWMARKET – Drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death of children under the age of 14, however, most drowning incidents are preventable.
 
In cooperation with the Safe Kids Canada's annual campaign and the Keeping YorKids Safe Committee, The Regional Municipality of York's Health Services department aims to raise awareness of drowning and near-drowning injuries in children.
 
WHEN: Saturday, June 2, 2007
  9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
 
WHERE: Bass Pro Shops
  Vaughan Mills Mall
  1 Pro Bass Mill Drive, City of Vaughan
 
WHO:  Exhibitors include:
• York Region Health Services (Injury prevention and health protection)
• Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
• York Regional Police
• City of Vaughan (Recreation and Culture Department)
• Vaughan Fire and Rescue Services
• Lifesaving Society
• Canadian Red Cross, York Region Branch
• Health Canada Product Safety Bureau
       
WHAT: Barbara Byers, Public Education Director with the Lifesaving Society will demonstrate the proper safety equipment required for keeping children safe around all bodies of water.  She will also be available to parents to help find the best type of lifejacket for their child.
BACKGROUND:
• Safe Kids Canada is the national injury prevention program of The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto
• The Safe Kids Week campaign raises awareness about a specific type of injury, and educates the public about prevention strategies
• This year's focus is on drowning prevention
• Keeping YorKids Safe is an injury-prevention program in York Region for parents/caregivers and children that focuses on childhood injuries such as choking, suffocation, scalds, burns, falls, poisoning and drowning
