NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York advises residents that a Viva service disruption could occur as early as 12:01 a.m. on Monday, September 22nd after negotiations between Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 113 and Veolia Transportation Inc. broke down earlier today.
Veolia Transportation Inc. is under contract to The Regional Municipality of York to provide Viva transit service.
In the event of a strike, service on all Viva routes will be discontinued. Residents are advised to use the York Region Transit (YRT)/Viva website and Customer Service Centre to stay informed about this situation and plan ahead.
Viva riders are advised to seek YRT services or arrange alternate modes of transportation, such as carpooling. Smart Commute offers a carpool matching service at www.carpoolzone.ca
YRT will continue to operate all other services under the current schedules.
In the event of a strike, YRT/Viva Transit Inspectors and Customer Information Representatives will be available at busy locations throughout York Region to assist customers and provide trip planning guidance. Additional staff will be on duty at the YRT/Viva Customer Service Centre to assist callers, and hours will be extended as needed throughout the strike period.
Viva provides five rapid transit routes along major York Region corridors, including Yonge Street and Highway 7, with links to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway at Don Mills, Finch and Downsview Station.
Approximately 160 Veolia operators and 90 Viva vehicles provide service to 35,000 boardings each weekday.
