York Region expands Household Hazardous Waste depots hours

NEWMARKET - The Regional Municipality of York is expanding the hours of operation at all Regional Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) depots to better serve the needs of our residents. The new hours are in effect at all HHW depot locations as of November 30, 2009.

 

Currently HHW depots are open two days a week with the exception of the Georgina depot, which operates two days per month. The new expanded hours will ensure York Region residents have increased access to waste management services and help divert more waste from landfill, while standardizing operational HHW depot hours with the Vaughan McCleary Court Community Environment Centre (CEC).

Vaughan HHW Depot

April 1st to October 31st annually, the depot will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays

 

*As of November 30, 2009, the East Gwillimbury HHW depot will no longer be open on Tuesdays, the Markham HHW depot will no longer be open on Wednesdays and the Vaughan HHW depot will no longer be open until 6 p.m. on Thursdays during the winter months.

 

To help promote the new hours to residents, informational flyers have been distributed at all HHW depots.  Beginning the week of November 16th, the Region will be placing advertisements in municipal papers, updating HHW depot hours in the 2010 municipal waste calendars and ensuring that all HHW depots have on-site signage announcing the change in operational times.

 

York Region staff will monitor the success of the expanded hours by tracking each depot’s staffing requirements and changes in the quantities of materials collected, plus conduct surveys at each depot to measure customer satisfaction with the expanded hours.  
             
York Region recommends properly disposing of household hazardous waste at any of our four depots. In 2008, the Region collected 1,700 tonnes of household hazardous material and 700 tonnes of electronic waste.

 

York Region remains committed to achieving a 60 per cent diversion rate by the end of 2010.
