Sun smart student wins shady prize for school

NEWMARKET – In celebration of Sun Awareness Week June 7 to 13, The Regional Municipality of York invites the media to attend the Sun Smart poster contest award presentation on Tuesday, June 15.

 

A total of 478 Grade 1 students from 36 York Region elementary schools submitted their posters to the York Region SunSense Coalition contest in March.
 
The winner of the Sun Smart poster contest will be awarded a tree for planting on their school grounds. This tree will create cooling shade for the students during outdoor activities.  Using shade is an important strategy in reducing ultraviolet (UV) exposure from the sun.

BACKGROUND:
 
• The annual Sun Smart poster contest educates students about sun safety and promotes sun safe behaviour. 

 

• The York Region SunSense Coalition consists of staff from The Regional Municipality of York Community and Health Services and Transportation Services Departments, the Canadian Cancer Society and the community.

 

• Sun Awareness Week is an annual celebration organized by the Canadian Dermatology Association encouraging Canadians to practice sun safety for the prevention of skin cancer.
