Sun smart student wins shady prize for schoolAnnual York Region contest celebrates sun awareness with Grade 1 studentsNEWMARKET – In celebration of Sun Awareness Week June 7 to 13, The Regional Municipality of York invites the media to attend the Sun Smart poster contest award presentation on Tuesday, June 15.
A total of 478 Grade 1 students from 36 York Region elementary schools submitted their posters to the York Region SunSense Coalition contest in March.
The winner of the Sun Smart poster contest will be awarded a tree for planting on their school grounds. This tree will create cooling shade for the students during outdoor activities. WHO: Mayor David Barrow, Town of Richmond Hill Staff and students from Richmond Hill Montessori and Elementary Private School York Region SunSense Coalition members BACKGROUND: • The annual Sun Smart poster contest educates students about sun safety and promotes sun safe behaviour. • The York Region SunSense Coalition consists of staff from The Regional Municipality of York Community and Health Services and Transportation Services Departments, the Canadian Cancer Society and the community.
• Sun Awareness Week is an annual celebration organized by the Canadian Dermatology Association encouraging Canadians to practice sun safety for the prevention of skin cancer.
