Kids CAN-BIKE York Region Bikefest teaches safe cycling skills at Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area
Parents asked to register their cyclists by calling 1-877-464-9675, Ext. 1581
NEWMARKET – A Kids CAN-BIKE York Region Bikefest will be held Saturday, May 29th at the York Region Community Safety Village at Bruce’s Mill Conservation Area in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.
The two-hour training sessions are free. To register, please call 1-877-464-9675, Ext. 1581. Registrants must bring their own helmets and bicycles in working order.
This event is open to children between the ages of seven and 13, who will learn safe cycling skills during a fun-filled day of activities.
CAN-BIKE is the Canadian Cycling Association’s nationally-standardized cycling safety program. CAN-BIKE programs provide instruction on all aspects of safe cycling on the road.

Background:
• York Region’s safe cycling training program expects to deliver the CAN-BIKE safe cycling program to 2,000 elementary school age students over the next two years.
• In a related initiative, York Region will train approximately 60 high school students to deliver the program. Those interested can call 1-877-464-9675, Ext. 1581 to obtain more information.
• High school students age 15 and up have the opportunity to teach the basics of safe cycling to elementary school children between the ages of seven and 13. Those who are interested can take a bicycle training instructor’s course and become qualified to teach children cycling safety and earn their community service hours as instructors.
• Students who commit to undertake 24 hours of training spread over several days will obtain a Junior Instructor Certificate from CAN-BIKE. As cycling safety instructors, students can obtain community service hours they need to graduate from high school.
• The CAN-BIKE cycling safety program provides a nationally standardized set of courses that can be taught through a variety of organizations that are interested in education, safety and health.
• These initiatives are part of The Regional Municipality of York’s implementation of the Pedestrian and Cycling Master Plan, a $44-million investment in cycling infrastructure over 25 years approved by Regional Council in 2008.
