The Regional Municipality of York to open new Accessible Trail

NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York will host an official opening for a new accessible trail in the Hollidge Tract of the York Regional Forest, located in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

 

Members of York Regional Council, Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville Council, the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee and the Regional Forest Advisory Team will be present for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and guided tour of the new trail.

(east side of Hwy 48 between Vivian Road and Aurora Road)

• The one-kilometre trail is one of the first to be built to the Government of Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) proposed Built Environment Standard

 

• The trail has a number of accessible features including:
o A packed, granular surface suitable for wheelchairs or other assistive devices
o Special grading to avoid steep slopes
o Widened pathway that is free of obstructions
o Accessible parking spaces

 

• York Region owns and manages more than 2,200 hectares of York Regional Forest, which consist of 20 properties and more than 120 kilometres of trails.  More than 1,600 people use the forest trail system daily for a variety of activities including hiking, snowshoeing and cycling.
