Investing in York Region’s YouthFunds available to enhance local youth programs NEWMARKET – The Regional Municipality of York invites non-profit youth clubs, groups and organizations to apply for up to $2,000 in funding to create youth engagement opportunities in the community. The Youth Engagement Grant helps eligible youth groups support a variety of educational and promotional activities that raise awareness about tobacco use with physical activity, healthy eating, injury prevention or substance misuse. Motivating and creating opportunities for youth engagement and action on health issues supports the goal of creating healthy communities in York Region. Funds are administered by York Region Community and Health Services with funding from the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport through the Central East Tobacco Control Area Network. Youth engagement is the meaningful participation and sustained involvement of a young person in an organized activity. These activities include sports, arts, music, volunteering, politics and social activism and can occur in any type of setting. Encouraging youth engagement provides benefits for all members of the community. Participation in an organized activity helps youth develop a sense of belonging and accomplishment through their connections with others. The community gains from positive youth interactions which lead to reduced risk-taking behaviours. More information and applications are available at www.york.ca/tobaccoThe deadline for applications is Monday, October 17, 2011, and successful applicants will be notified by Wednesday, October 26, 2011.
