RSS Feeds: Introduction

What is RSS?

The acronym RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a web feed format that allows sites to share content.

Why is RSS useful?

Suppose that you have 20 or more favourite websites and blog (web log) sites that you like to visit regularly for new information. Visiting this many sites can take hours. With RSS, you can subscribe to a website or blog and have all the information sent directly to you.

How do I subscribe to an RSS feed?

Internet browsers such as FireFox and Internet Explorer 7 have the ability to read RSS feeds. Alternatively, you can download an RSS Reader program. There are a number of RSS Readers (also called RSS Amalgamators) available online … many for no charge.

You can use your search engine to find, download and test these readers to see which one you like. Some have very simple features to help sort out all of your subscribed feeds, and some have very advanced features. See which one suits your needs best.

Once you have selected a browser or reader, go to one of your favourite sites and look to see if it has an RSS feed. Sites that are RSS enabled will have one of the following symbols that you can click to subscribe.
