MEETING HELD ON JANUARY 21, 2004

The Accessibility Advisory Committee began its meeting at 4:20 p.m. on January 21, 2004.

1  UPDATE - COMMITTEE PROCEEDINGS

 

The Accessibility Advisory Committee advises the Community Services and Housing Committee of the following matters having been considered by the Accessibility Advisory Committee with the following action:

1.  Wilf Morley and Regional Councillor J. Frustaglio were elected Chair and Vice Chair respectively for the year 2004.

COMMUNICATIONS

2.  Ben Caron, Chairperson for the Town of Georgina Accessibility Advisory Committee, dated December 11, 2003, regarding 'Town of Georgina's final annual Accessibility Plan'. (A copy of the Town of Georgina's Accessibility Plan is available in the Community Services and Housing Department) Receive and send response. Received with direction to staff to prepare a response from Accessibility Advisory Committee Chair W. Morley to Mr. Caron providing the name of a contact person at the Region, as requested.

 

Committee further requested that staff prepare a report for the next meeting regarding the possibilities for future meetings between the local Accessibility Advisory Committees and the Region.

 

3.  Memorandum dated January 12, 2004 from Joann Simmons regarding proposed 2004 York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting dates. Approved as circulated.

 

4.  Association of Municipalities of Ontario Member Communication dated January 15, 2004 regarding "Province Begins Consultations on Ontarians with Disabilities Act." Received.

PRESENTATIONS

 

The following reports were made to the Committee and any presentation materials are on file in the Office of the Regional Clerk.

5.  Review of York Region Web Site by Marc Gallant, Multimedia Specialist. Received.

 

6.  Report back – Results of Accessibility Advisory Committee Tour of the Administrative Centre and Next Steps by Barry Crowe, Director Property Services. Received.

 

7.  Report back – Revisions to the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee Terms of Reference by Joann Simmons, Commissioner of Community Services and Housing.  Received.

OTHER BUSINESS

8.  Regional Councillor J. Frustaglio advised Committee that Mr. Brett Yerex, Vice Chair of the City of Vaughan Accessibility Advisory Committee had recently passed away. Committee requested that a letter of condolence be sent to Mr. Yerex's family, together with Committee's gratitude for his work.

9.  Committee welcomed Marlene Johnson, Councillor and Accessibility Advisory Committee member and John Rogers, Chief Administrative Officer, both of the Town of East Gwillimbury.

10.  Committee requested that a policy be developed to recognize the contributions of departing members of the Committee. Committee further requested that an appropriate recognition be prepared, subject to the approval of the Committee Chair and Vice Chair, for presentation at the next Committee meeting to former Chair Diane Humeniuk.

11.  Committee was advised of a request from the Provincial Accessibility Directorate to appoint a Committee member to participate on a provincial Committee to advise on the development of a Provincial Guide for Accessibility Advisory Committees.

 

Committee passed the following motion:

 

That Regional Councillor D. Wheeler be appointed to serve on the Provincial Accessibility Directorate committee to advise on the development of a Provincial Guide for Accessibility Advisory Committees.

12.  Ms Marty Shultz addressed Committee regarding various accessibility concerns.

 

The Accessibility Advisory Committee adjourned at 5:44 p.m.
