The Solid Waste Management Committee advises Council of the following matters having been considered by the Solid Waste Management Committee with the following action:

 

 

ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR

 

1. Regional Councillor Ferri was elected Chair and Regional Councillor Heath was elected Vice Chair of the Solid Waste Management Committee for 2007.

 

 

PRESENTATIONS

 

2. Solid Waste Initiatives – 2006 to 2010 Term

Andy Campbell, Director, Solid Waste Management Branch provided an overview of the Solid Waste Management Branch initiatives for the 2006 – 2010 term, including the Branch organization, 2006 tonnage statistics, facilities, 2007 budget, 2007-2010 priorities and other issues. Received.

3. J.D. Leach, City Clerk, City of Vaughan, September 29, 2006, regarding a resolution In Support of Greening Vaughan – Excessive Packaging and requesting Council join with the City of Vaughan to urge manufacturers across Ontario and Canada to address the issue of excessive packaging. Received.

 

4. Sheila Birrell, Town Clerk, Town of Markham, November 30, 2006, endorsing the City of Vaughan Resolution in Support of Greening Vaughan – Excessive Packaging and requesting the Region's support and action. Received.

 

5. P.M. Madill, Regional Clerk, Durham Region, October 5, 2006, enclosing for information a Report of the Commissioner of Works regarding "Summary of Waste Survey Findings". Received.

 

6. Laurel C. Broten, Minister of the Environment, November 10, 2006, acknowledging the Region's letter of September 22, 2006 relating to Zero Waste and its connection to the Region's waste management plans. Received.

 

7. Marlene Johnston, Councillor, Town of East Gwillimbury, November 13, 2006, congratulating the Region on the adoption of Zero Waste Policies and Practices. Received.

 

8. Doug Reycraft, President, Association of Municipalities of Ontario, December 22, 2006, regarding Andy Campbell – AMO Volunteer and his contributions to waste management policy in Ontario.

 

The Committee received the communication and added their congratulations and thanks to Andy Campbell for his contributions.

 

9. Memorandum from Andy Campbell, Director, Solid Waste Management, January 10, 2007, regarding Joint Waste Diversion Strategy and comments from the Local Municipalities.

The Committee received the communication and requested staff prepare a chart with regular updates to Committee indicating the status of the Region and Local Municipalities in reaching their 65% waste diversion goal.

 

10. John O'Gorman, October 12, 2006, regarding forms to be completed by the public at the Hazardous Waste Depots. Received and referred to staff. Staff were also requested to confirm the method used by the Halton Region Hazardous Waste Depot.

 

 

The Solid Waste Management Committee adjourned at 10:45 a.m.
