Thiru The Accessibility Advisory Committee began its meeting at 4:02 p.m. on June 24, 2009. 1 UPDATE - COMMITTEE PROCEEDINGS The Accessibility Advisory Committee advises the Community and Health Services Committee of the following matters having been considered by the Accessibility Advisory Committee with the following action: [The following links open .pdf files of the Presentations] PRESENTATIONS 1. Presentation by Beverley Verwey, Disaster Management Coordinator, Canadian Red Cross, Region of York Branch, regarding 'Emergency Disaster Planning'. Received. The Committee requested that the emergency preparedness report, being prepared by the Emergency Management Branch for presentation to the September 23, 2009 YRAAC Committee meeting, also incorporate suggestions for the registration of people with disabilities. 2. Presentation by Michelle Herder, Program Manager, Corporate Customer Service Strategy, Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, regarding 'AODA Customer Service Regulation Update'. Received. 3. Presentation by Piragal Thiru, Planner – Accessible Services, York Region Transit, Transportation Services Department, regarding 'MyRide Travel Training Pilot Update'. Received. 4. Presentation by Lisa Gonsalves, Manager, Program Development and Delivery, Community and Health Services Department, regarding 'Access-ability: York Region's 2009 Accessibility Plan'. Received. The Committee suggested a number of issues and areas of involvement for 2009 which were captured by staff and will be incorporated on upcoming YRAAC meeting agendas. The Committee further requested that they be consulted regarding the upcoming Transit Committee report which addresses the issue of reduced fares for people who are in receipt of ODSP. Memo to the York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee from Cordelia Abankwa-Harris, Managing Director, Strategic Service Integration and Policy, Community and Health Services, June 11, 2009 regarding 'Item for Discussion (June 24, 2009) Accessibility Advisory Committee Meeting: Establishing the York Region AAC's Priorities in the Implementation of the Region's 2009 Accessibility Plan'. Received. 2. Copy of letter from Denis Kelly, Regional Clerk to Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, Chair, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee dated May 22, 2009 regarding 'Update on the Final Proposed Transportation Accessibility Standard'. Received. 3. Copy of letter from Denis Kelly, Regional Clerk to Regional Councillor Vito Spatafora, Chair, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee dated May 22, 2009 regarding 'Update on the Proposed Accessible Information and Communications and Employment Accessibility Standards'. Received. 4. Copy of letter from Peter Hume, President, Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) dated May 20, 2009 to the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services regarding the 'Initial Draft Employment Accessibility Standard'. Received. 5. Copy of e-mail from Wilf Morley, Vice-Chair, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee dated May 5, 2009 to Lois Davies, Program Manager, AODA/ODA regarding 'Repeat Applications for Wheel Trans, York Region Mobility Plus and Durham Transit'. Received. Sharon Doyle, Manager, Mobility Plus, York Region Transit will report back at the September AAC meeting on the results of a meeting of all specialized service transit agencies in Ontario which York Region Transit is hosting later this week. OTHER BUSINESS 1. Donna Hardaker, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee member, reporting back on the 'Accessibility Advisory Committee Regional Forum' held June 1, 2009. Received. 2. Kirsten Hill, York Region Accessibility Advisory Committee member, reporting back on 'York Region Rapid Transit Corporation Seminar' held May 27, 2009. Received. The Committee requested that the Chair of the YRAAC correspond with Markham Council and the Markham Accessibility Advisory Committee to request that, in the absence of a standard, Markham staff work with the Region to ensure consistency in the wayfinding and signage throughout the entire Viva Highway 7 project. 3. Copy of article from York Region Media Group, dated June 11, 2009, regarding 'Making York Facilities Accessible'. Received. 4. The Committee requested staff consider preparing a financial overview of the annual and projected costs associated with the implementation of each of the AODA standards, as well as the associated funding sources and options for public/private partnerships. Lisa Gonsalves informed the Committee that, at the direction of Council, cost assessments will be developed by an internal committee and lead departments as the standards are released into regulation. 5. Lois Davies, Program Manager, AODA/ODA, Community and Health Services Department provided a brief update on the status of the Transportation and the Information and Communication standards. Lois informed the Committee that Charles Beer has been appointed to conduct a review of the AODA legislation and prepare a report that will reflect consultations with people across completed in January 2010.
