The Community and Health Services Committee advises Council of the following matters having been considered by the Community Services and Housing Committee with the following action:

 

 

ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR

 

1. Regional Councillor J. Heath was elected Chair and Regional Councillor V. Spatafora was elected Vice Chair of the Community and Health Services Committee for the remainder of the term of Council 2009-2010.

 

 

DEPUTATION

 

1. Patti Bell, Executive Director, Blue Door Shelters, regarding single women's homeless shelter in York Region. Received with direction to staff to meet with representatives of this group to review the design and feasibility of establishing a women's shelter and to recommend options for site use and ownership and report back to this Committee to outline funding options, both capital and operating, that may be available to be allocated to support this project.

3. Regional Council Extract of Clause 6, Report No. 3 of the Community Services and Housing Committee - April 23, 2009 regarding 2009 Ontario Budget Highlights Community and Health Services Perspective. Received.

 

4. Sid Ryan, President, CUPE Ontario, September 1, 2009, requesting that Wednesday, October 21, 2009 be proclaimed as 'Child Care Worker & Early Childhood Education Appreciation Day'. Recommend that Regional Council recognize this day.

 

5. Memo from Joann Simmons, Commissioner of Community and Health Services, September 16, 2009 regarding Service Indicators for Social Assistance and Housing. Received.

 

 

OTHER BUSINESS

 

1. Verbal Update from Joann Simmons, Commissioner of Community and Health Services regarding Community and Health Services response to the tornado in the City of Vaughan. Recommend an additional verbal update be presented to Regional Council on September 24, 2009.

 

2. Regional Solicitor J. Hulton introduced solicitor Dean Horner. Mr. Horner has been assigned to support the Committee in Community Services matters.

 

 

PRIVATE SESSION

 

The Committee resolved into private session at 4:55 p.m. to consider the following:

 

1. Private Report of the Commissioner of Community and Health Services -

Recommendations for Funding Under the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing

Program 2009 Extension.

– security of municipal property

 

2. Private Report of the Commissioner of Community and Health Services -

Opportunities to Increase the Supply of Affordable Housing – Request for

Proposal.

– security of municipal property and proposed or pending acquisition of land

 

The Committee resumed in public session at 5:03 p.m. with no report out. The Committee's recommendations on the above matters will be forwarded to Regional Council for consideration at its September 24, 2009 Private Session.

 

 

The Community and Health Services Committee adjourned at 5:04 p.m.
