CANADA - ONTARIO PARTNERSHIP CREATES JOBS,
STIMULATES ECONOMY IN OAK RIDGES - MARKHAM
 June 12, 2009

Residents of Oak Ridges - Markham will benefit from $87,161,984.66 of federal and provincial infrastructure funding to improve transportation, rehabilitate historical buildings, replace and upgrade local arenas, announced today by Oak Ridges - Markham MP Paul Calandra and MPP Dr. Helena Jaczek.

These projects are an example of both governments' commitment to stimulating the Ontario economy through the creation of jobs in our communities. These projects will enhance local facilities and services, improve transportation and create employment opportunities.

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our Government is getting shovels in the ground and flowing money faster to stimulate the economy and create jobs for Ontarians," said Calandra. "Thanks to the strong relationship between our two governments, we can work together to help Ontario communities and the economy thrive immediately and in the future."

"Under the leadership of Premier Dalton McGuinty, Ontario is leading the way," said Dr. Jaczek. "We are creating jobs and the decisions announced today will soon lead to improved transportation and enhanced facilities and services in our community. Our governments are working together to modernize infrastructure - creating a competitive advantage that attracts business and strengthens our economy today and into the future."

"Through Canada's Economic Action Plan, our government is investing in infrastructure and important community projects.  Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, key investments such as the one we are making in the Thornhill Community Centre and Library are helping to create jobs and improve the quality of life for families during this challenging economic time in our history," said Hon. Peter Kent, M.P., Minister of State of Foreign Affairs for the Americas

Richmond Hill

"This is obviously an important and welcome contribution to Richmond Hill's infrastructure program. These funds mean job creation, essential infrastructure investments and improved competitiveness. What we are most excited about is how our residents will directly benefit from this support, including the reconstruction of roads, refurbishment of one of our oldest and well-utilized arenas and over 50 km of new cycling routes in the Town," said Town of Richmond Hill Mayor Dave Barrow.

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville

The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is very pleased with the announcement
of funding for two of Council's top four infrastructure projects. "The Town has new arenas, a fire hall and sports parks already under construction in Stouffville and with this new funding support, the Museum/Community Centre Expansion and McCowan Road projects in the Town's rural
areas can now be advanced.  They have been in our books, but the Town needed
the additional government funding to make them happen," said Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Wayne Emmerson.

Markham

"This is a great example of all three levels of government working together for the benefit of local communities during a difficult economic situation", said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. "This funding makes a significant contribution to our community and will mean we can accelerate important infrastructure improvements for the benefit of all residents. I am also pleased to see funding support for green initiatives which will support the objectives of Ontario's Green Energy Act."

King

"I am delighted and gratified that the Township of King will be receiving this very substantial stimulus grant.  This much needed facility will benefit all of our residents across the whole of the municipality. Thank you to the Federal and Provincial Governments, Council and Staff
for their assistance in the success of this application. We all look
forward to a grand opening in 2011", said Mayor Margaret Black.

Regional Municipality of York

I am very pleased that the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario recognize the need for municipal infrastructure investment and applaud them for this needed stimulus funding," said York Region Chairman and CEO, Bill Fisch.  "This financial contribution will greatly complement our existing capital projects and help to keep York Region residents working during these uncertain economic times."
